About 85% of defectors are women, and 60 to 80% of them are sex trafficked in China. Most defectors cross with the aid of a broker, but many can’t afford it and are sold to traffickers by the broker. Some brokers lie and sell the defectors into sex trafficking even after they are paid. Some are sold as wives to farmers in China, due to the higher population of men as a result of aborted female babies due to China's one-child policy. Some are sold to brothels. This has created a sick dynamic between China’s desire to alleviate social instability due to the lack of partners for men and desperate North Korean refugees. So, the CCP doesn’t adequately protect North Korean refugees from sex slavery. Besides getting sold as wives, an increasing number of young women and girls are trafficked into the growing cybersex industry. This industry forces young women to work for 17 hours a day in a virtual chat room, communicating with clients through a webcam, having to do whatever the client asks, usually sex acts. They are forced to make a certain amount of money through the chat room, all of it taken by the trafficker. If the quota isn’t met, girls are physically abused and denied food by the trafficker. They are under constant surveillance in part to prevent them from committing suicide. North Koreans who are stuck in sex slavery are hidden from the outside world, and therefore aren’t caught and deported. But if they try to escape, they have nowhere to go and will almost certainly be caught and deported to face imprisonment in a labor camp, torture, and even execution.
