Before Kim Jong-Un's crackdown on the border and COVID-19, well over a thousand North Koreans escaped to South Korea every year despite life threatening obstacles. Many remain hiding in China where they face deportation back to North Korea and imprisonment in labor camps, torture, and even execution for "political crimes." 85% of defectors are women, and from 60-80% of them are sex trafficked in China. Most defectors cross with the aid of a broker, but many can’t afford it’s price and are forced into being trafficked to pay the broker. Some brokers lie and sell the defectors into sex trafficking even after they are paid. Many are sold as wives to farmers in China, due to the higher population of men as a result of China's one-child policy.
